The Bullmastiff is descended from the English Bulldog and the English Mastiff. Bullmastiffs are good guards due to their courageous, confident nature and the fact that they are strong and fast. Still, they are very gentle towards their family members. They love to be among their people. These guards protect their property and family with conviction. They raise their voices when necessary, but they are not real barkers. They quickly pick up the mood in the house and do not like arguments or fuss. Yet they are balanced and not easily impressed.
The Bullmastiff male has an average height of 63 to 68 cm. The female is between 61 and 66 cm high. A male weighs about 50 to 63 kg and a bitch between 40 and 50 kg. The coat is close to the body and short. Common coat colors are tan or red with a black mask. Sometimes there is also a small white mark on the chest.
The Bullmastiff sheds little hair and its coat requires relatively little grooming. A quick daily brushing over his coat with a rubber glove is sufficient. Bullmastiffs are happy with a few short walks a day. They do not need an extensive exercise plan. You have to protect them extra on hot days. They have few problems with being alone and can adapt to different living environments, even apartments. In addition, they have a very high pain threshold. They can drool quite a bit. Overall, this breed has few health problems. Nevertheless, it is interesting to check and clean the ears weekly and to trim the nails twice a month. A Bullmastiff usually lives 8 to 10 years old.
