A Shih Tzu is a small Chinese breed dog with a friendly character. He learns quickly and gets along well with children. He is not a hunter or a watchman, but a typical companion. This social, affectionate householder is happy as long as he can be close to his owner. He likes to be pampered and enjoys following ‘his people’ closely.
With a lot of imagination, the Shih Tzu resembles a lion. His name therefore means ‘little lion’. Still, the resemblance to this predator stops at the mane-like hair around the snout. The typical flat shape of its muzzle make it very recognizable. His long-haired coat usually contains beige, black or red with white.
Shih Tzus sometimes dare to squeak or snore, but they hardly ever bark. They are perfect for small houses, apartments or flats. However, they like long walks. It is very important to protect these dogs from heat and cold. To keep a Shih Tzu healthy, you should regularly clean its eyes and ears and brush its coat. This avoids the development of inflammation and fur mats. If you pay attention to the maintenance of a Shih Tzu, these dogs can get very old. Average life expectancy is 10 to 16 years.
